What do the SquidBooks reading levels mean?

All SquidBooks articles are offered at five reading levels. These levels are based on the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) scale.

  • Level 1 = Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 4

  • Level 2 = Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 6

  • Level 3 = Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 8

  • Level 4 = Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 10

  • Level 5 = Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 12

Which sites/domains do I need to approve to access SquidBooks?

Sometimes students may not be able to login if a district or school has a restrictive web filter. If your students are seeing an infinite spinner and cannot sign up, the web filter may be blocking them.

To fix this issue, pass this info along to your District IT people:

In order to access all of SquidBooks material, student devices will need access to the following domains:

*.squidbooks.com

*.googleapis.com

*.google.com

*.algolia.net

Once the district has approved these domains, students should be able to login and access SquidBooks.

What do the quizzes measure?

Each science quiz measures student understanding at four levels: basic, know, apply, and reason. For basic questions, students recall and recognize simple and straightforward ideas. For know questions, students recall or recognize accurate science statements, such as vocabulary, facts, information, symbols, and units. For apply questions, students compare, contrast, describe, and classify; order or sequence events; interpret scientific information in light of a science concept or principle. For reason questions, students solve problems, develop explanations, draw conclusions, make decisions, extend knowledge to new situations, and reason from scientific principles to an answer.
